Blogging used to require a fair amount of technological know-how.
Now, thanks to browser-based blogging softwares like Blogger, WordPress or TypePad, you simply type in your entries (called “posts”) and the software manages the publishing process for you.
To post a blog, simply log onto a blog software website with your username and a password. The software then presents you with a simple form that asks you to state the title of your new post. This is followed by a little box wherein you type what you want to say.
The box looks and works just like a word processor. It offers bold, italics and underline formatting, and allows you to add links, images, audio, PDF files or Word documents. You can even include online video from YouTube.
Once you have entered everything for a particular entry, click “publish.” A few seconds later, your entry is updated on the blog and available to readers around the world.
Blogging is so simple that you can begin immediately.
To get started, go to a blogging Web site, such as WordPress.com or Blogger.com, and follow the simple instructions. It only takes a few minutes to log on, create an account and post your very first blog for all the world to see.
Once you have an account, you don’t even have to be at your own computer to post updates. Because the blogging software is browser-based (rather than residing on your PC hard drive), you can log on and post a new blog from any computer and Internet connection anywhere in the world. The software even allows you to post by e-mail or Blackberry!
When first starting out, try testing several different markets. Set up a couple of blogs on different topics and see which one gets the most search engine hits and which one people are most responsive to. Once you have a winner, stick to that topic for all future blogs.
If possible, update your blog at least three times a week. If that presents a problem, consider having somebody on your staff post on Monday, you post on Wednesday and somebody else on Friday. Or, write several blogs in advance so that you can go on automatic pilot when it comes time to post.
To succeed in today’s highly competitive business environment, you must differentiate yourself from other companies in your marketplace. Blogging offers a quick and very cost-effective way to create a loyal following of people who are interested in your topic, service or product.
Many businesses spend six months and thousands of dollars designing and building a Web site. With the right software, a blog gets you started in a matter of minutes.
